The Ontario Heritage Act grants the power to designate properties of cultural heritage value or interest. Heritage designation prohibits demolition or removal and requires municipal approval for alterations. Some properties are merely listed on the Ontario Heritage Act Register, allowing changes without restrictions. However, Bill 23, More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022, requires properties listed prior to the new legislation to be designated orremoved from the register by Jan. 1, 2025.
